Port Fairy is a coastal town in south-western Victoria, at the point where the Moyne River enters the southern ocean. Wannon Water, based in Warrnambool covering a region over approximately 23,500 square kilometres from the South Australian border in the west, to Balmoral in the north, to Lismore in the east and the lower Gellibrand River catchment on the south coast, supplies water and sewerage services to a permanent population of more than 82,000 people, including residential, commercial, industrial and rural customers. The township of Port Fairy is located within the Wannon Water region.
Port Fairy’s potable water is supplied from a water tower located on the outskirts of town. The water tower was designed to maintain the town water pressure by maintaining the level in the tower fed from the Wannon Water water treatment plant located next to the water tower. The tower was built in 1975 and, due to its age is undergoing a routine refurbishment to ensure customers in Port Fairy can enjoy secure drinking water supplies well into the future.” The works involve recoating the internal and external walls to protect the underlying steel from corrosion, as well as other minor external maintenance.
During the estimated 10-week refurbishment a by-pass pressure solution was required. Wannon Water engineers worked closely with MJK Automation to discuss the options and associated costs for a reliable bypass pressure pumping solution. MJK offered a low risk two-stage upgrade of the water supply controls. In the first stage the existing 3 x 18kW water pumps were fitted with Danfoss Aqua dedicated to water frequency converters> The pump system then ran for many months on vsd control to prove the new pump vsd system reliability. The second stage was to add a MCO101 Danfoss cascade control card to the vsd pump set to manage the mains pressure whilst the water tower was off line. The cascade control in all vsd mode offers the best performance, accurate control and maximum energy savings with additional pumping protection such as no flow detection, loss of prime, broken pipe protection as standard in the cascade control, pump outage for maintenance and duty rotation of the master pump are included features of the pump pressure solution.
The Danfoss cascade control system has been operating for several months maintaining the water pressure to Port Fairy whilst the water tower is being refurbished.
