City West Water Altona wastewater treatment plant is undergoing a replacement program for their current aeration blowers.
The existing blowers are being replaced with Atlas Copco ZS Screw compressor’s, as this technology compared to traditional lobe compressors can be up to 30% more efficient. The new blowers, coupled with the best in class 98% efficiency drive from the Danfoss AQUA FC200 Series, makes for a very efficient low energy cost solution.
MJK Automation supplied 6 X 160kW IP54 Danfoss AQUA Variable Speed Drives for the project and were present to assist in programming the variable speed drive at the Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) in the Atlas Copco NSW staging facility. Once the FAT testing was completed, the installation of the first unit was finalised at the Altona site.
Management of the blower
The commissioning and control of the blower utilising the Danfoss VSD, is controlled via ethernet. Many of the features of the dedicated water drive were used in programming the VSD such as: automatic motor adaption, early acceleration and current limit control.
Each were programmed for optimum control and total system efficiency.
The low heat output of the Danfoss FC200 Drive due to its high efficiency, proved to aid in reducing the heat load in the blower facility- not to mention the 50°C operating ambient temperature within the Danfoss FC200 Drive, which allows for the system to operate in high ambient environments.
